Undoubtedly one of the greatest, most famous and panoramic excursions in the Alps. It all takes place in a high-mountain environment with a stop-over in the Gnifetti hut (or Mantova hut). The Margherita hut is located on the top of the Gnifetti peak, the highest peak in Valsesia; it was built in 1893 and rebuilt in the 1980. It’s not only the highest hut in Europe but also an important meteorological and geographical observatory of the Piedmont Region, as well as a laboratory affilated with the Turin University. It’s one of the highest equipped laboratories in the world and for many years it has been the main office for medical and scientific researches.
Day 1: In the morning we go from Gressoney to the Indren peak using the ski lifts. Then we ascend to the Mantova and Gnifetti huts after two hours climbing.
Day 2: We leave early in the morning, we climb the glacier crossing the snow bridges upon the big crevasses. Climbing time: 4 hours from the hut. Difference in altitude: 950m to the peak. From there we experience an extraordinary slope that ends up near the ski lift (in case of perfect snow conditions we can continue till Gressoney)…A slope in a never ending magic.
