Great ascent to the one and only Italian 4.000m-high peak, the Gran Paradiso, at exactly 4.061m of altitude. It’s a 2-day ascent to the peak, sleeping along the way in the Chabod hut at 2.750m; round-descent passing by the Vittorio Emanuele hut. As an alternative, depending on the snow conditions, we can decide to climb through the most famous way, from the Vittorio Emanuele hut.
First day: Departure from the Valsavarenche, we ski along the wonderful summer path through the steep wood that enables climbers to reach the valley upper slopes and get to the hut at 2.700m of altitude (diference in altitude: 800m).
Second day : We leave the hut and go on with almost no elevation from the basis of the Lesciaux glacier to the basis of the Gran Paradiso northern face, passing by some crevasses, to the hump at 3.800 m of altitude. There we meet the path which climbs to the Vittorio Emanuele hut and, after a last steep slope, we reach the pass right under the peak, where we leave our skis (1.300 m of difference in altitude). We then hike along the ridge and after a short while we reach the statue of the Virgin Mary located on the peak (at 4.061m). We can go back the same way or following easy fun slopes that lead to the Vittorio Emanuele hut, thus completing the traverse; from there we reach Valsavarenche skiing on a breathtaking descent with 2.100m of difference in altitude.
