Classic climb that takes place in the heart of the Gran Paradiso National Park. The Gran Paradiso is the only 4.000 m-high peak entirely located in Italy, and its summit was reached for the first time in 1860. The three main slopes are very different from each other: the western one, on which the normal route wings, is a slope with not much crevassed ice and with no steep stretches; the eastern slope, towards the Valley of Cogne, is a wall that steeply falls on the tormented Ghiacciaio della Tribolazione, while the northern one is a beautiful frozen slide. The ascent to the Gran Paradiso by the normal route is ideal for hikers who want to experience their first glacier and a high mountain environment.
Day 1: Departure from Cuneo (or meeting at Ivrea – highway) to Valsavarenche. Check of the group’s climbing equipment and ascent in two or three hours to Chabod hut or to Vittorio Emanuele hut. In the second part of the afternoon we will rest for the next day’s ascent.
Day 2: Wake up at around 4:00 am, breakfast and departure at 5:00 am to the summit. The ascent takes place first on traces of path and then on glacier. The last meters require some sequences on rock. The climbing requires 4 to 6 hours for the ascent and 2/3 for the descent. Descent that can be done on the same route of the ascent or going to the other hut, thus drawing a ring route.
