This course is built on two fundamental pillars that represent the essence of safety and effectiveness in alpine environments: Progression Technique and Safety Technique. These two aspects, while distinct, run parallel and constantly integrate to ensure a conscious and safe mountain experience.
The first outing will be dedicated to acquiring basic skills for moving safely on snowy slopes and gullies. We will focus specifically on the effective and conscious use of ice axe and crampons, essential tools for progression on snow and ice. We will explore different rope team configurations, analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of each in relation to terrain and context. Particular attention will be given to learning and practicing the most appropriate types of ties for tackling slopes of varying steepness and snow gullies, ensuring a safe and effective connection between rope team members.
Starting from the second outing, we will move to high mountain terrain to tackle more complex and specific scenarios. The focus will expand to glacier progression, with an analysis of its peculiarities and associated risks. We will dedicate ample time to safety aspects, with an introduction to route finding and assessment techniques, crucial elements for making informed decisions and minimizing objective dangers. Finally, we will address crevasse rescue techniques, providing the practical and theoretical tools to manage a potential emergency in glacial environments.
Through a practical and progressive approach, this course will provide you with the essential skills to move safely and independently in alpine environments, transforming your passion for the mountains into an even more rewarding and conscious experience.
Who is it for
This course represents the privileged gateway to the fascinating world of high mountains and glacial environments, with a specific focus on learning the correct and safe use of crampons and glacier progression techniques.
It is designed for those who already have a solid foundation of hiking experience, perhaps with some normal route ascents under their belt, or for those familiar with climbing techniques. This background will provide you with awareness of the mountain environment and a certain aptitude for the physical activity necessary to tackle this new level of challenge.
Program
COURSE PRESENTATION EVENING
- Format: The presentation evening will be held at the Global Wall climbing gym in Borgo San Dalmazzo, offering the opportunity to meet in person and learn more about the course. For those unable to attend in person, an online session will also be available simultaneously via Google Meet, ensuring everyone has the chance to receive the information.
- Content: During the evening, the course curriculum will be presented in detail, with the specific objectives of each day and the skills that will be acquired. The complete list of necessary equipment for participating in mountain outings will also be presented, providing useful guidance on what to wear and what to bring.
FIRST DAY: LEARNING ON SNOW AND MIXED TERRAIN IN THE MARITIME ALPS
- Location: The outing will take place as a day trip in the Maritime Alps, choosing a snow gully specifically selected based on current snow conditions to ensure an optimal and safe learning environment.
- Objectives and Activities: This first day will be dedicated to practical learning of fundamental progression techniques with ice axe and crampons on snow-covered terrain. The rope team belaying maneuvers in snowy environments and on mixed terrain (rock and snow) will also be demonstrated and practiced—crucial elements for safety in high mountains.
SECOND AND THIRD DAY: IMMERSION IN THE WORLD OF GLACIERS (OVERNIGHT IN HUT)
- Duration and Logistics: These two consecutive days include an overnight stay in a mountain hut, offering a more immersive experience in the high mountain environment.
- Objectives and Activities: We will focus on refining progression techniques on classic glaciers, integrating the use of ice axe and crampons with rope techniques specific to high mountains and glacial environments (knots, ties, roped progression). Particular attention will be dedicated to learning and practicing the crevasse rescue maneuver, a vital skill in glacial environments.
- Location: The precise location for these two days will be determined closer to the outing, taking into careful consideration the weather forecast and the specific mountain conditions to ensure maximum safety and the best learning opportunities.

Useful information
IMPORTANT NOTICES (WHATSAPP GROUPS)
- Primary Communication Channel: All course-related communications, including logistical updates, outing details, and last-minute information, will be sent via dedicated WhatsApp groups for participants.
LOGISTICAL DETAILS (MEETING TIME AND PLACE)
- Weather-dependent Updates: The exact meeting time and location for each outing will be communicated by the guides 1 or 2 days before the scheduled date. This timing is necessary to be able to accurately evaluate the weather forecast and choose the most suitable and safe location for the activity. We recommend being flexible and ready to receive this information on short notice.
LUNCH AND HYDRATION (INDEPENDENCE)
- Individual Responsibility: Lunch is a packed lunch, so each participant is responsible for bringing enough food for the entire day in the mountains. Likewise, it is crucial to ensure you have an adequate supply of water or other beverages to stay hydrated during physical activity. Guides can provide advice on this, but individual preparation is essential.
OUTING LOCATIONS
- Main Geographic Area: The practical outings of the course will take place preferably in the stunning Maritime Alps or on the Mont Blanc Massif, a territory rich in opportunities for learning alpine techniques on rock and snow.
- Possible Relocations: However, in order to optimize environmental conditions (weather, crowding, terrain specifics) and ensure the best possible training experience, it is not excluded that some outings may be organized in other areas. Any change of location will be communicated promptly via WhatsApp groups.
