Cottian Alps

Stunning limestone in a breathtaking environment. An imposing peak of the Southern Cottian Alps, Rocca la Meja rises powerfully from vast grassy expanses. The ridge, a “dividing line” between the Maira and Stura valleys, is characterized by wide meadows crossed by ancient military mule tracks: these are the Gardetta, Bandia, and Margherina plateaus which, at a constant elevation of 2,000 m, form an undulating expanse of pastures 20 km long, interrupted only by modest outcrops of fractured rock, surrounded by lush grass. These uniform expanses are dominated by the slender form of Rocca la Meja which, from its 2,831 meters of altitude, towers over the entire surrounding area. Those who want to climb on the Meja can now choose from 50 routes of all types and difficulty levels, from the normal route to traditional routes with pitons and friends (some also very demanding from a psychological standpoint) to modern sport routes with bolts on the magical slabs that this rock offers.

Program

Departure during the day from Cuneo at the Global Mountain Alpine Guide Office. After a brief check of individual equipment, we transfer by car to the Arma Valley (departure from Borgo San Dalmazzo) or to the Maira Valley (departure from Dronero). Once near Rocca la Meja, we leave the car and head to the base of the routes, crossing the magnificent meadows of the Gardetta plateau (30 minutes to 1 hour approach). Depending on the chosen route, we reach different limestone towers that may or may not reach the summit of Rocca. Descent by rappel or via the normal route. Return in the evening.
