Not a difficult mountaineering excursion. The climb requires good walking fitness (8-10 hours).

Level

Area

Cottian Alps

A fairly simple Normal Route, but one that is demanding enough to no longer be considered hiking.

The Stone King is the iconic mountain of the Cuneo Alps. A prominent feature of the Piedmontese landscape and beyond, once known by the ancient Romans as Mons Vesulus (visible mountain), it looms unmistakably on the horizon across the western Alpine arc.

This is a long ascent that passes the Sella Refuge and then crosses the Colle delle Sagnette and the mountain’s south face. We’ll depart from the refuge at dawn, ascending to the Sagnette Pass along a steep route equipped with chains. From the pass, we descend into the upper Forciolline Valley to quickly reach the base of Monviso’s south face, near the Andreotti Bivouac. The final 500 meters of the climb follow an interesting route that alternates between exhilarating rock sections, traverses, and suspended snowfields.

The view from the summit is magnificent! A must-see for all mountain lovers.

Program

1st day

Transfer to Pian del Re and ascent to the Quintino Sella Refuge; meet the guide directly at the refuge at 5:00 PM for a briefing and equipment check. Elevation gain: 620 m (approximately 2.5 hours).

2nd day

We'll wake up before dawn, at 4:00 a.m., and have breakfast at the refuge. We'll ascend to the Passo delle Sagnette (2,991 m) on a secured path, already roped up and safely secured. We'll then continue on foot over scree to the Andreotti bivouac (3,225 m), where the mountaineering section of the climb begins. We'll alternate walking sections with short, easy rock climbs to the summit. All mountaineering sections will be roped together with the mountain guide who will oversee the group's safety. Elevation gain: 1,200 m uphill (approximately 5 hours) and 1,820 m downhill to reach Pian del Re (approximately 7 hours).

The Mountain Guide is solely responsible for carrying out the program and may, for various reasons (weather conditions, mountain conditions, physical condition of individual group members, safety, etc.), modify the course of the trip during the outing itself. It will always be the Mountain Guide's task to propose alternative dates or destinations to the main one.

Voluntary cancellation of a booking can be done by contacting our office at promotion@globalmoutain.it specifying your first name, last name, and the activity you were registered for. If you purchase an activity 60 days in advance of the first outing, you have 48 hours after purchase to cancel and you will receive a refund net of a 3% administration and management fee.
