Monte Rosa Massif

The Monte Rosa Spaghetti Tour is a spectacular high-altitude traverse. A five-day high-altitude tour that passes through some of the most beautiful 4000m peaks in the Western Alps, such as the Breithorn, Castor, Lyskamm, and many others.

This traverse, created by Swiss Guides, is called the Spaghetti Tour because of the excellent hospitality and culinary experience that only Italian refuges can provide. It requires great physical shape, as you never drop below 3300 meters in altitude, even if the daily walking hours aren’t extremely long. There is plenty of time to acclimate; the nights in the refuges get gradually higher leading up to the experience at the 4554-meter Capanna Margherita, the highest refuge in the Alps. But let’s look at the Spaghetti Tour itinerary in more detail, retracing an experience from early July.

Program

DAY 1

The Monte Rosa Spaghetti Tour starts in Cervinia with a briefing and gear check. Take the cable car up to Plateau Rosa and from there to the Western Breithorn 4165m. Slowly descend to the Guide d’Ayas Refuge at 3400m, passing the foot of the Central Breithorn, Roccia Nera, and Pollux. Dinner and overnight stay at the refuge.

DAY 2

From the refuge, head up towards Castor 4228m along the stunning and panoramic west ridge, then descend to Colle del Felik. Crossing the glacier of the same name, you reach the Quintino Sella Refuge at 3,575m. Dinner and overnight stay at the refuge.

DAY 3

Leave the refuge and climb the Western Lys glacier to face the steep ascent of the Lyskamm Nose 4272m. Carefully descend to the Eastern Lys glacier and from there a short distance to Capanna Gnifetti at 3647m. Dinner and overnight stay at the refuge.

DAY 4

Climb to Capanna Margherita 4505m. From here, in a series of ups and downs, you'll have the chance to traverse a beautiful and highly panoramic ridge, climbing Parrotspitze 4436m, Ludwigshöhe 4341m, Schwarzhorn or Corno Nero 4321m, Balmenhorn or Cristo delle Vette 4167m, and Vincent Pyramid 4215m. Then descend to the Città di Mantova Refuge at 3500m. Dinner and overnight stay at the refuge.

DAY 5

Today start with a descent heading towards the normal route of Punta Giordani 4046m. The climb is fairly easy and consistent, offering views of a new corner of this great mountain. Descend to the Punta Indren lifts, then to Gressoney. Return to Cervinia via shuttle bus.
