Without a doubt, the excursion to Rifugio Regina Margherita represents one of the great classics of the Alpine arc. This panoramic trip, which winds through the imposing high mountain scenery, offers an unforgettable experience with the possibility of stopping at the welcoming Rifugio Gnifetti (located at 3,647 meters) or the adjacent Rifugio Mantova al Garstelet (at 3,496 meters).
The final destination of this extraordinary adventure is Rifugio Regina Margherita, an iconic structure perched on the summit of Punta Gnifetti, which at 4,554 meters represents the highest peak in Valsesia and the second highest summit of the Monte Rosa massif. Its history dates back to 1893, when it was built at the behest of the Italian Alpine Club and dedicated to Queen Margherita of Savoy, a passionate mountain enthusiast. The refuge was then expertly renovated in 1980, maintaining its historic charm while adapting to modern needs.

Program
Day one:
The day begins in Gressoney, where we'll use the ski lifts to easily reach Punta Indren, the ideal starting point for our ski mountaineering adventure. From here, with climbing skins, we'll ascend toward Rifugio Mantova and then to Capanna Gnifetti. This first stage involves about 2 hours of climbing and 300 meters of elevation gain, allowing us to acclimatize well and enjoy our first ski runs in a high mountain environment.
Day two:
Departure is scheduled in the early morning hours, taking advantage of the overnight freeze typical of late spring for safer progression on the glacier. The ski ascent will require crossing snow bridges, which should be stable at this time of year, allowing us to pass over crevasses. We'll tackle an elevation gain of about 950 meters until reaching the summit of Rifugio Regina Margherita, with an estimated time of about 4 hours from the refuge.
The reward will be a fantastic ski descent on transformed snow, ideal for exciting turns. In optimal snow conditions and using the lift connection, we can ski directly down to Gressoney, enjoying a long and rewarding off-piste run in a magnificent alpine environment. This descent, with the sensation of gliding endlessly, will be the highlight of this unforgettable ski mountaineering adventure.
