Level

Area

Aosta Valley

This is the only 4000-meter peak entirely on Italian territory. An ascent in a fascinating environment in the heart of Gran Paradiso National Park. It’s a relatively easy climb with no technical difficulties and doesn’t exceed 4,061 meters, for many the baptism of the 4000-meter peaks. The summit can be reached from two refuges, Chabod and Vittorio Emanuele II. Since the technical difficulties are comparable, the loop route starting from one refuge to reach the other after conquering the Gran Paradiso summit is highly rewarding.

Program

Day 1 Departure from Cuneo (or meeting in Ivrea on the highway) to reach Valsavarenche. Check of the group's mountaineering equipment and 2-hour hike to the refuge. Overnight at Rifugio Chabod. The guide may arrange to meet directly at the refuge.

Day 2 Wake up around 4 AM, breakfast and departure for the summit. The ascent follows trail tracks in the first part and then continues on the glacier. There are no particular technical difficulties except in the last few meters to reach the summit cross, where easy rocks must be overcome via a short via ferrata. The ascent takes 4 to 5 hours for the climb and about 2 to 3 hours for the descent. The descent can be made along the ascent route or to the other refuge (Chabod or Vittorio Emanuele depending on where you stayed overnight), completing a loop route.
