Intermediate Alpinism. The ascent requires good hiking fitness and some basic knowledge of climbing on classic terrain.
Level
Area
Maritime Alps
A ridge climbing route characterized by moderate difficulty and breathtaking views; on the clearest days, during the climb you can see the French Riviera and sometimes even the coasts of Corsica. This is a rather long route that requires skillful alternation between moving together and pitching where difficulty and exposure increase: here the Alpine Guide becomes essential not only for completing the ascent in normal time, but also for those with a higher technical level who can refine their progression techniques and rope team management on this beautiful route.
Program
1st day
In the afternoon, meet with the guide in Borgo San Dalmazzo at the Alpine Guides Office – Global Mountain; after a brief check of individual equipment, transfer by car to Terme di Valdieri and Pian della Casa (approximately 1,700 m). From here, ascend in about 2 hours to Remondino Hut (2,450 m) where you'll have dinner and spend the night.
2nd day
The route initially follows large scree fields of big blocks; soon leaving the trail to Passo Dei Detriti, you climb along traces through a gravelly gully leading to Colletto Freshfield. From here, rope up to begin progression along the ridge, initially consisting of wide slabs exposed to the north over the severe Argentera basin; then the ridge becomes increasingly sharp, sunny, and panoramic, successively passing the Purtsheller, Genova peaks, and finally with an airy traverse reaching the Spalla dell'Argentera, from which the summit is reached shortly. Descent along the Normal Route to Passo Detriti and Remondino Hut. Return to Cuneo in the afternoon.
At the beginning of the season (May–June), if snow conditions permit, it's possible to combine the Sigismondi Ridge with the ascent of the Freshfield Couloir, climbing from Bozano Hut and completing a truly impressive loop!
